John Green said that the Muslims thought that Muhammad was the final prophit to lead people to God. The book said this and the class. I think it is very interesting.

One thing we both mentioned are the similarities between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. They are all Monotheistic religions that believe in one god. Also, Jesus was mentioned in each Holy Book, although Judaism and Islam believe Jesus was simply a prophet.

A few things John Green mentioned that were also in our textbook were...The five pillars, the first one being Shahada; the second being Salat; the next, Sawm; Zakat; and finally, Hajj. Another thing John Green mentioned is that Muslims pray facing Mecca, five times a day. One more thing that John Green mentioned was that Muhammad took Mecca from the Quraysh tribe.

John Green said that the there were four caliphs, the first was Muhammads father in law Abu Bakr. The last one was his son in law, Ali, which was written in the text book. The text book said that the four caliphs wanted to spread allahs message to everyone.

John Greene talked about the Five Pillars of Islam. In the video they used the Islamic form of the words and said that when fasting, Muslims are aloud to eat but only at night. However in the book if I remember correctly it says that Muslims are not aloud to eat at all.

The connection between the book and the video I saw The Five Pillars were mentioned in the video. One of those was that they had to give money to the poor. Another was that they had to do fasting, they could eat a big meal at night and stay up and watch bad TV. In the mornign that had to work in the hot sun until nighttime. And then they could have another big meal.

John Green mentioned that before Muhammad came, the people were in tribes. Being that the Arabian peninsula was mostly desert, in order to survive they had to be in tribes. If not in a tribe or kicked out it basically a death sentence.

One thing I noticed he mentioned was the taxes the Muslims gave to the non-Muslims. It was fast but I noticed he said they had to pay a special tax to practice their religion, which made most people become Muslims because they didn't want to pay the tax. It wasn't in the textbook but he said 5 times a day people in Egypt kneel down and pray, but we talked about it in class, which made me remember.

in Islam, Allah is the god, but Muhammed was the founder of this religion but he is only a prophet to Allah, so when the five prayers are held, muhammed is not worshipped, yet he is the founder of this religion, so how do they know if Allah is the real god of islam?

In John Green's video he talked about how at first no one in Mecca accepted Muhammad's religion so he had to go instead to Medina and throughout that time his religion of Islam was spread. Another topic that he talked about that was similar to the things we learned in our text book was that all Muslims must pray towards Mecca five times a day, which is an extension to the other thing he mentioned about the five pillars, or laws, of the Islam religion. Lastly, he mentioned that Muhammad took his original living place of Mecca, where his family had first inspired his spreading and believing in Islam, from a tribe called the Quraysh.

This video did a long and interesting segment on the five pillars of Islam, which we talked a lot about in class. This was interesting because I did not realize how much these five simple rules could change my life. Not eating for a whole month?!?! That would be terrible. Also stopping five times a day for prayer seems like it could impede on some things. What if you were very busy doing something important? couldn't the prayer interrupt something that could be beneficial as a whole to Islam? DON'T GET ME WRONG HERE but I feel a little reproachful towards giving your own salary to others, no matter what kind of financial stance you are in. Not that I'm a greedy person or something like that, but I do realize that some people in Islam live modestly, and that giving others more than they can afford could mess things up for their entire family! It does make some sense for the rich or more middle class to be doing it though.

John Green mentioned how Muhammad got kicked out of Mecca and he had to go to Madina. Muhammad got kicked out of Mecca because he was wanting to spread the word of Allah but the people in Mecca didn't want that. The connection I made is that John Green makes learning a lot more interesting than just reading from a text book.

I like this video because it is very informational. If Islamic history is so important, why doesn't everyone know about it? One thing I noticed that was similar to the textbook and talking in class was that Angel Gabriel came to Muhammad and told him to recite the word of God. Another is that Abu Bakr had many accomplishments and a part in helping the Islamic empire expand tremendously. One more is that Muhammad and his followers were forced to move from Mecca (Muhammad's hometown) to Medina. Another obvious one are the five pillars Shahada, Salat, Sawm, Zakat, and Hajj.

When I watched John Green's crash course I noticed how he compared the three monotheistic religions a lot. In our books I noticed how they also compare the monotheistic religions, and how much alike they are. I always thought that religions had to have distinct differences and keep to themselves, but I now see that their ideas and knowledge are quite similar.

John Green talked about many things that are similar to those in our textbook. However, the thing that stood out most to me was that Muhammad was considered the prophet of God instead of a person to worship, like Jesus in Christianity. It surprises me that when Islam was split into two (Sunni and Shiite) after Muhammad died, it wasn't over if Muhammad was a prophet or a holy being, it was over who should succeed Muhammad.

John Green talked about how fasting was much easier in the winter because the days were shorter rather than in summer, when the days are hot and long. He also talked about Hajj which was mentioned in the book as taking the journey to Mekkah once in your lifetime if you are Muslim, providing you're healthy enough. And finally, he talked about prayer five times a day. Anywhere you are in the world, you face Mekkah when you do this.

Is this Alexander's tomb?!It now appears likely that Ptolemy adapted a vacant tomb that had been prepared by and for the last native Pharaoh of Egypt, Nectanebo II. However, this Pharaoh had fled south to Ethiopia, when Egypt had been invaded by the Persians in 343BC, so he never had the opportunity to occupy his tomb. The site of the prospective tomb was a chapel within the temple complex of the Serapeum in the cemetery area of ancient Memphis at Saqqara. It lay at the end of a mile-long avenue of sphinxes. The Serapeum complex was rediscovered by Auguste Mariette in 1850-1851 by excavating the sands away from the sphinxes one by one. Guarding the entrance to the chapel of Nectanebo II, Mariette discovered an incongruous semicircle of life-size Greek statues of poets and philosophers, which appear to date to the time of Ptolemy. Some of them can be identified, including Pindar, whose house and descendants Alexander had saved at Thebes, Homer, who was Alexander's favourite poet, and Plato, who had been the mentor of Alexander's tutor, Aristotle. Could these statues have been erected to honour Alexander's tomb?
