Ms. Mary Noble
This is the beginning of my 27nd year of teaching! I've taught in inner city Detroit, Alaska, Thailand, Egypt, Dubai, Hedrick and South! I grew up on a farm in Michigan, and didn't travel at all until I graduated high school. I did a European tour with my high school French teacher. Since then, I've loved learning about the world!
After college, I served in the United States Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa. I had no running water or electricity for the whole two years. I lived in a mud hut and spoke Bambara with my village friends. After a couple cases of malaria I then had an incurable case of wanderlust---ever curious about the world and getting out of my comfort zone. I got a Masters degree at the fabulous University of Michigan while I taught in inner city Detroit---that was definitely out of my comfort zone! It was a wonderful experience overall and made me more committed to teaching. I earned teaching credentials in secondary social studies, language arts and French. I also earned elementary certification and an administrator's license.
I moved to Juneau, Alaska and taught middle school for four years. I worked as a sea kayak guide in the summers showing off Alaska to tourists. I enjoyed the Alaska wilderness, glaciers, whales, eagles, bears, and went subsistence fishing for salmon with a dipnet, like the traditional Native Americans of Alaska. I didn't catch anything. :(
I volunteered for a summer in the Indian Himalayas, living at 12,000 feet with a family on their farm (again no electricity or running water). I spent the summer picking and drying apricots and packing up dried yak dung patties for fuel for their Himalayan winter. I lived in Thailand for four years teaching at an American curriculum school there. Thai people are so gentle and friendly and funny---and the food is incredible! Also in Thailand, I learned to scuba dive, rode elephants and spotted a wild Bengal tiger in the jungle while on a trip with my 7th graders! So beautiful! Most recently, I also lived four years in Egypt teaching at Cairo American College. I learned how to drive a jeep over sand dunes and got to snorkel with a dugong! (Do you know what a dugong is? Look it up!:) I've now traveled to over 40 countries, and 48 states. I love sharing my passion for learning about our world with students. In 2015, I led Hedrick and AMS students to Amsterdam, Italy, Greece and Turkey!
I love Southern Oregon and enjoy time outdoors. I love hiking, camping, road biking, and I teach yoga to adults. I come from a big, loving extended family in Michigan. I have 45 cousins just on my dad's side of the family! We have big family reunions each year and my grandmother, who turned 101 this year, plays her harmonica around the bonfire at midnight.
I look forward to a great year.
